Six readers shared a great discussion of "The Other Wes Moore: one name, two fates" by Wes Moore, at the Tuesday, March 8 meeting of the AAL book club in the library's small meeting room! The readers spoke passionately about the issues raised in this book which chronicles two parallel lives. The talk touched on the role of free will, decision-making skills, choices, community responsibility in education, effective parenting, advocating for children, the impact of drugs and the drug culture on vulnerable populations, and the devastating effects of low expectations.

Celebrating Black History Month with the African American Read In

On Saturday, February 26, eight local Black authors gathered to read and perform excerpts from their works to an audience of enthusiastic readers at the Fleetwood-Jordain Center in Evanston. The gathering marked the second Read In to be held here in Evanston and the sponsors and organizers vowed it would not be the last. Several local Black publishers, including Adira Books and Aziza Publishing were on hand to sell copies of books, which the authors signed.

Work of Faith Ministry sponsors "African American Literature Read In"

In honor of Black History Month, the Fleetwood-Jordain Community Center will host eight multi-talented authors reading and performing exceprts from their published works. The 2011 African American Literature Read-In and Book Fair is sponsored by Books Inc Bookstore and organized by Workof Faith Ministry & Literacy. The first annual event will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 1655 Foster Street, Evanston, IL.
The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are encouraged. For information, contact Gevell Wagner at (773) 350-4675.

New book, Grammy museum exhibition honors hip-hop
